Podcast Analysis

http://www.soundopinions.org/cm/reviews/index/48

What album did you listen to? Why
I listened to the album El Camino by The Black Keys, show #319. I listened to this one because after a lot of looking I found a group which I know, but it isn´t so popular, and that was the band “Black Keys”. I also listened to this one because I want to know more about their songs.

Was the podcast entertaining? Why or why not?
The podcast was entertaining for me. It was entertaining because I was always wanting to hear their opinions on the songs of the album they were putting. Also because the song they put in the podcast I think were the best of their albums. I also liked it because they talked about the genre of the songs, the band style of playing, how they have gotten better, and a little bit of history of the band. And since I am a musician, I really enjoyed hearing all that.

Did you agree with their opinions? Why or why not?
I surprisingly agreed with their opinions. They said that they thought that the Black Keys were only going to have one hit, “Tighten Up”, as me, but I have really liked the songs there were in the album, as well as Greg and Jim did.

What did they do in the podcast that was effective or that you liked?
I think that they put the songs in the correct moment, their tone of voice was the adequate one, and their opinions and facts were really interesting.

How did the podcast begin and end?
The podcast started with the main song of the album, and it ended by saying if they would give it a “Buy it”, “Burn it”, or “Trash it”.

Frank Sinatra

That's life, that's what people say.
You're riding high in April,
Shot down in May.
But I know I'm gonna change their tune,
When I'm right back on top in June.

That's life, funny as it seems.
Some people get their kicks,
Steppin' on dreams
But I just can't let it get me down,
Cause this big old world keeps spinnin' around.

I've been a puppet, a pauper, a pirate,
A poet, a pawn and a king.
I've been up and down and over and out
But I know one thing:
Each time I find myself flat on my face,
I pick myself up and get back in the race.

“That’s Life” by Frank Sinatra starts with an impassioned tone. When this song plays and it reaches its climax, we see that Frank is reflecting on how life has various ups and downs. Its main purpose is to tell us how life can be wonderful at some points but in other occasions it may be as horrible as a bird with no wings.

This song has a very profound meaning. During the song we can see that Frank Sinatra wants to show us that life is good and bad, you have good days and bad days, and that you must continue on, since, life is like that. We can see this because in the first verse he says:  You're riding high in April, shot down in May”. What this means is that you may be very wealthy, and think you have your life settled, but in an instant, that may just go away and could become poor again. Furthermore, the sentence “I've been a puppet, a pauper, a pirate, a poet, a pawn and a king” shows us that you may be a lot of things in life, for good or for bad, but in the end that is how life has treated you. So this song speaks about how life may be like a roller coaster, and that that is just a thing of living in this world.

Los Del Rio - Macarena

Lyrics:

Dale a tu cuerpo alegria Macarena
que tu cuerpo es pa' darle alegria y cosa buena
dale a tu cuerpo alegria Macarena
eeeh Macarena.... aaahe!

Dale a tu cuerpo alegria Macarena

que tu cuerpo es pa' darle alegria y cosa buena
dale a tu cuerpo alegria Macarena
eeeh Macarena.... aaahe!

Macarena tiene un novio que se llama

que se llama de apellido Vitorino
y en la jura de bandera del muchacho
se la dio con dos amigos
aaahe!

Macarena, Macarena, Macarena
que te gustan las movidas guerrilleras
aaahe!

Macarena sueña con el corte ingles

y se compra los modelos mas modernos
le gustaria vivir en Nueva York
y ligar un novio nuevo
aaahe!

What Makes This Song Terrible:

Despite the popularity of the song, and its internationally known lyrics and dance moves, I would consider this song as a horrible one. This is a bad song because first of all the lyrics are awful, and even though you can understand the meaning, which is about a girl dating a lot of guys, the performers of the song repeat a lot the same words, and use very simple terms that don´t give anything content to the listener.
I would say that the reason for why this song is so popular is because three years after its launch in Spain (the song Macarena came out first in Spain, and it was known vaguely for it being a summer song), but when Bill Clinton started dancing to the song, it became very well known across the globe. This song also maintained its popularity because of its choreography and because of it being a “fun” song .
But if we truly analyze the song we can see that it is a poor song when it comes to meaning and the beats and rhythms were mostly gotten from other songs. So "Macarena" by "Los Del Rio" is a song that I consider it to be terrible.
